The motivation behind the founding of the Hardwood Distributors Association was to obtain recognition of wholesale hardwood distributing yards as an important segment within the lumber industry.
The purpose of the Association today is to maintain this recognition and to protect and promote the interests of its members.
Association members have always been active in the promotion of hardwood lumber through organizations such as The Hardwood Institute, The Hardwood Council, Hardwood Manufacturers Association and regional groups like The Pen York, Memphis and Indiana Lumbermen Clubs.
In 1980, under the leadership of Charles Wilson, HDA contributed $5,000 to the construction efforts of a new NHLA headquarters and inspection school in Memphis. The projection room and visual training system carries the name of the association as its sponsor.
In 1988, the HDA, working with the NHLA staff, developed a booklet entitled "Illustrated Guide to Hardwood Grades." This publication is an excellent guide for the end user, consumer, and architect in understanding wood identification and grade rules.
The wholesale hardwood distribution yard is a highly specialized business. Their association is rich in history and tradition. Together, they will continue to operate as a unique and important segment of the hardwood industry.
